Bed bugs are small, wingless, parasitic insects that feed on human blood. Official public health guidance from Healthdirect Australia confirms that while bed bugs do not transmit infectious diseases, they are recognized public health pests because their bites cause intense itching, allergic reactions, secondary skin infections, and significant mental distress.

Widespread Resurgence: 91% of surveyed pest control firms report encountering greater numbers of bed bugs in the last two years , compared to just 37% five years prior.

Hardest Pest to Control: 58% of pest management professionals ranked bed bugs as the single hardest pest to eliminate—well ahead of ants, cockroaches, and termites.

Unexpected Hiding Places: Technicians reported finding bed bugs in unusual spots like electronics, automobiles, kitchen areas, shower heads, and curtains, proving that basic inspections are not enough.

Primary Causes: This rurvey  linked this  to increased international travel and human migration, coupled with widespread insecticidal resistance to standard pyrethroid chemicals.
